Results of two survey studies are presented. It is shown that attitudes of the public about "technology in general" are not stable and can easily be affected by how the subject is introduced. Eight areas of technology are compared on the basis of empirical relations in attitudinal judgments, in attribute ratings, in self- assigned importance weights of attributes, and in importance of reference groups and persons. On the basis of similarities in these four kinds of judgments, three clusters of technology (...) areas were identified: a cluster of modern reproductive technologies, an information cluster containing automation, computer, and communication technologies, and a cluster containing nuclear energy and military technology. The attitude toward "technology in general" can not be considered as an aggregation of attitudes toward these areas of technology: The relations between general attitude and specific attitudes are only moderate to negligible. Astavakragita (The Song of the Self Supreme) contains the Sanskrit text of Astavakragita (both in Nagari and Roman script), its English translation, Exegesis and Glossarial Index. It presents in twenty chapters the substance of Astavakra`s teaching in respect of the Cosmic Self in the form of his dialogue with Janaka, the seer-king of Videha. The teaching is based on the Upanisadic creed of Absolute monism (Advaitavada) that identifies the Self with the non-dual Ultimate Reality. This, the third Volume in this Encyclopedia to deal with Buddhist philosophy, takes the reader from the middle of the sixth. Many of the authors and texts treated here are not well known to the casual student of Buddhism.

Die Idee des absoluten Wissens schließt die Idee der Begründung dieses Wissens durch und aus sich selbst ein. Das absolute Wissen unterscheidet sich in sich selber in den Grund des Wissens und dessen Folge, eben das Wissen. Das Wissen ist also die Identität des Wissens mit seiner Negation, dem Sein an sich. Husserls Phänomenologie will die radikale Ausführung der als absolutes Wissen oder Wahrheit strenge Wissenschaft verstandenen Philosophie sein. Sofern das absolute Wissen ein Wissen ist, muß die Phänomenologie deshalb die (...) Identität seiner beiden Pole herausstellen ; d.h. durch die phänomenologische Reduktion darf nichts vom Ansichsein oder der Welt verloren gehen. Sofern das Wissen dagegen absolut ist, muß das negative Verhältnis zwischen den Polen Welt und Bewußtsein einen Abgrund aufreißen ; der wechselseitige Ausschluß beider nimmt die absolute Form des schlechthinnigen Widerspruchs an. Durch die Konstitution der Bewußtseinsgegenständlichkeiten kommt also etwas vom Bewußtsein völlig Verschiedenes, eben die Welt, zustande. Die Form der phänomenologischen Grundbegriffe Intentionalität, Reduktion und Konstitution ist demnach die der wechselseitigen Implikation zweier sich gegenseitig zugleich auch aufhebender Momente. Da diese Aufhebung zugleich auch die Beständigung und Bestätigung des Aufgehobenen ist, bleibt als ihr Resultat nicht nichts übrig, sondern eine in ihren Grundlagen verworrene und doppelgesichtige Philosophie. Die Grundstruktur der Phänomenologie äußert sich in Paradoxien, deren Ursprung und Notwendigkeit Husserl nicht mehr aufgeklärt hat. Der Rechtsgrund zu diesem Unaufgeklärtlassen liegt darin, daß erst nach der Aufrichtung und Durchführung der Phänomenologie, d.h. an ihrem Ende, eine Reflexion auf die Phänomenologie als solche und im Ganzen vollzogen werden konnte. Der Rechtsgrund für diese Totalreflexion liegt aber seinerseits ebenfalls und in gleichem Maße in der Idee des absoluten Wissens beschlossen, welche die absolute Selbstbegründung des Wissens fordert oder, wie Husserl sagt, die Reduktion auf die äußersten Horizonte. Der äußerste Horizont der Phänomenologie (als des absoluten Wissens) ist aber die Phänomenologie selbst. So ist die Reflexion auf die Grundlagen der Phänomenologie einerseits ein Unternehmen innerhalb des absoluten Wissens und der Phänomenologie, wie sie andererseits auch erst an derem Ende, also jenseits der Phänomenologie, vollzogen werden kann. Dieser Widerspruch im Bestimmen des Wesens der Phänomenologie bewahrheitet die Bestimmung dieses Wesens als des Widerspruchswesens schlechthin. Die Phänomenologie bildet demnach die Bewegung, sich bzw. die Idee des absoluten Wissens selber aufzuheben. Dies ist aber nicht die Feststellung eines „Scheiterns” des phänomenologischen Projekts. Vielmehr hat dieser Sachverhalt positive Bedeutung : Die Phänomenologie verendlicht sich selber zu einer Philosophie, um sich selbst zu überleben in der Aufhebung dieser ihrer Endlichkeit auf die Philosophie als solche hin. Durch das Übergehen der unendlichen Idee in die Endlichkeit entfaltet diese sich in sich selber zu ihrer wahren Unendlichkeit. Die Idee des absoluten Wissens ist also nicht eine abstrakte und leblose Chimäre, welcher Husserl in seiner Phänomenologie nachgejagt wäre. Sie bildet im Gegenteil die Bewegung der inneren Selbstveränderung des Absoluten und ist die Selbstbewegung seiner Idee. (shrink)

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a lipid mediator with a wide variety of biological actions, particularly as an inducer of cell proliferation, migration and survival. LPA binds to specific G‐protein‐coupled receptors and thereby activates multiple signal transduction pathways, including those initiated by the small GTPases Ras, Rho, and Rac. LPA signaling has been implicated in such diverse processes as wound healing, brain development, vascular remodeling and tumor progression. Knowledge of precisely how and where LPA is produced has long proved elusive. Excitingly, (...) it has recently been discovered that LPA is generated from precursors by ‘autotaxin’, a once enigmatic exo‐phosphodiesterase implicated in tumor cell motility. Exogenous phospholipases D can also produce LPA, which may contribute to their toxicity. Here we review recent progress in our understanding of LPA bioactivity, signaling and synthesis. Cette étude analyse la pensée actuelle sur les décisions-fin-de-vie (DfdV) en France d’un point de vue hollandais. Un nombre limité d’interviews avec des ‘opinion-leaders’ français est pris comme base du project. Jusqu’au jour présent, le domaine des DfdV en France a été troublé en l’absence de définitions et de législation plus spécifiques. Les médecins français pourront faire face à un dilemme en soignant un malade mourant, pris en étau entre le caractère illégal officiel de l’euthanasie d’une part et l’obligation professionnelle (...) de traiter chaque cas de façon particulière d’autre part. La conséquence de l’environnement réglementaire incertain est une déresponsabilisation des médecins français vis-à-vis de leurs collègues et des patients. L’adoption de réformes législatives, en ayant la possibilité d’augmenter le nombre de cas d’euthanasie, se heurtait en France à des arguments cartésiens, paternalistes et religieux. En Novembre 2004, l’Assemblée Nationale a adopté une proposition de loi ayant pour but de rendre plus transparente la mise en pratique des limitations et des arrêts de traitement et de reduire la crainte des médecins de poursuites pénales. Cette proposition de loi a été par la suite approuvée par le Sénat. Aux Pays-Bas, l’euthanasie–la terminaison active de la vie–est légale et régulée par des critères précis. L’approche hollandaise fait référence au concept anglo-saxon d’autonomie du patient et correspond à la préférence générale de la société hollandaise pour la révélation et la régulation des activités controversielles plutôt que de tolérer leur existence sub rosa. Depuis l’entrée en vigueur de la régulation sur l’euthanasie aux Pays-Bas le nombre de cas rapportés a augmenté, mais pas le nombre d’euthanasies. Les règles sont respectées et la qualité de la communication entre médecin et patient est élevée. La vigilance Française pour l’autonomie professionnelle offre un exemple de valeur pour les Hollandais. Les Hollandais, de leur part, fournissent des exemples concrets pour la régulation du domaine des DfdV en France dont on a fait un début récemment. (shrink)

Introduction: The Dutch Euthanasia Act states that euthanasia is not punishable if the attending physician acts in accordance with the statutory due care criteria. These criteria hold that: there should be a voluntary and well-considered request, the patient’s suffering should be unbearable and hopeless, the patient should be informed about their situation, there are no reasonable alternatives, an independent physician should be consulted, and the method should be medically and technically appropriate. This study investigates whether physicians experience problems with these (...) criteria in medical practice.Methods: In 2006, questionnaires were sent to a random, stratified sample of 2100 Dutch physicians . Physicians were asked about problems in their decision-making related to requests for euthanasia or assisted suicide after enforcement of the 2002 Euthanasia Act.Results: Of all physicians who had received a request for euthanasia or assisted suicide , 25% had experienced problems in the decision-making with regard to at least one of the criteria of due care. Physicians who had experienced problems mostly indicated to have had problems related to evaluating whether or not the patient’s suffering was unbearable and hopeless and whether or not the patient’s request was voluntary or well considered .Discussion: Physicians in The Netherlands most frequently reported problems related to aspects in which they have to evaluate the patient’s subjective perspective. However, it can be questioned whether placing emphasis on these subjective aspects is an adequate fulfilment of the duties imposed on physicians, as laid down in the Dutch Euthanasia Act. (shrink)

Ignoring the temporal dimension, an object such as a railway tunnel or a human body is a three-dimensional whole composed of three-dimensional parts. The four-dimensionalist holds that a physical object exhibiting identity across time—Descartes, for example—is a four-dimensional whole composed of 'briefer' four-dimensional objects, its temporal parts. Peter van Inwagen (1990) has argued that four-dimensionalism cannot be sustained, or at best can be sustained only by a counterpart theorist. We argue that different schemes of individuation of temporal parts are available, (...) which undermines van Inwagen's argument. (shrink)
